A heat pump is sized from a heat-loss calculation for your home, not from its square footage alone. Insulation, windows, air leaks and the coldest temperatures where you live all change the answer. As a rough guide, newer, well-sealed homes need less capacity than older ones of the same size, and an oversized unit costs more and runs less evenly.
Rough starting points
| Home | Well sealed, newer | Average | Older, draughty |
|---|---|---|---|
| Condo or small bungalow | 1.5 to 2 tons | 2 tons | 2.5 tons |
| Two-storey, about 2,000 sq ft | 2.5 tons | 3 tons | 3.5 to 4 tons |
| Large detached home | 3.5 tons | 4 tons | 5 tons, or improve insulation first |
What we measure
Room sizes, window areas, insulation levels and an air-tightness estimate. It takes about an hour, and you get the calculation in writing.
